I started collecting Falcom music almost immediately after learning that video game music is sold on CD in Japan, way back in 1999. By the year 2001, I had acquired much of the Falcom discography at that time. The reason has nothing to do with nostalgia. Rather, it was the overabundance of positive reviews of music from Ys at soundtrackcentral.com. My first exposure to Falcom’s music was the CD “The Very Best of Ys”. After that came Sorcerian and I was hooked beyond any hope of recovery. I did eventually try to play some Falcom games and they were horrible, leading me to conclude that Falcom is a music company that makes games on the side.

Turok Dinosaur Hunter predated Goldeneye on the N64, coming out before the summer of 1997. It was thus the first 1st person shooter I played on the system and I became quite comfortable with its controls, using that scheme in every shooter thereafter. I recorded the Turok music myself by disabling sound effects. I had thoroughly whipped that game, beating it without any cheat codes. That was not easy, due to the difficult jumping and the need to conserve ammo. Turok’s music was good, but Turok 2 went beyond - far beyond. It is transcendent music. Turok 3 was such a disappointment that I didn’t bother to finish playing it.

Konami is the big one. I have more albums exclusive to Konami than any other company. I grew up playing Castlevania, Contra, Lifeforce, and Gradius and later discovered Metal Gear Solid. Madara and Lagrange Point have the best music from Konami games that I have never played. I recorded the music from the NES cartridges of Castlevania II and III, since Konami has not published them on CD. I managed to get most of the tracks from the SNES version of Dracula X, since that has also not been published on CD. I know there is an SPC set, but emulated sounds are not the same.

In terms of impact on gaming, I would have to rate Nintendo’s games as #1. I don’t know how I would have lived without The Legend of Zelda, or if, to this day, I would even care about video games. I remember playing Atari when it was top of the line in technology, but it was still crap. Nintendo’s old games, although technologically outdated, can still be greatly enjoyed. Atari could barely be enjoyed when it was the leader. When it comes to Nintendo’s music, there is so much nostalgia here that it has formed new brain structures in my skull. I don’t even know how to start talking about how much of this music I like.

When Nintendo sold Rare, I knew my days as a serious gamer were coming to a close. Rare was the main draw to the N64 and I consider the Golden Era of video games (in my life) as the time I spent playing N64 Rare games. I made the Blast Corps recording and Jousto made the Goldeneye recording. Banjo Kazooie is the only video game I played that I seriously considered devoting a part of my life to memorizing its levels, for the purpose of recording speed runs. My love of Rare games started at age 11 (that was in 1987), when I discovered Wizards & Warriors.

When I was growing up, Sega was the enemy. I was a loyal consumer of Nintendo products until my early twenties. When I saw the Sega Dreamcast in Funcoland one day, I was surprised at how much better it looked than the N64. I played Sonic Adventure for a while and wanted more. None of this Sega music is nostalgic for me, since I was forbidden from playing those “horrible” games as a youngster. However, the music from Sega can be used to demonstrate that nostalgia is not always a factor for why people listen to video game music. I have never played After Burner, Power Drift, Fantasy Zone, or Streets of Rage, but I love the music.

The only SNK games I played as a youngster were Athena, Alpha Mission, and Ikari Warriors. I thought Athena was garbage, couldn’t beat Alpha Mission, and could barely beat Ikari Warriors. The levels in Ikari Warriors were tortuously long. I never owned a Neo Geo, but I dreamed about owning one. Due to the price tag of $700, it was all I could do. The King of Fighters Best Arrange Collection was one of my first exposures to SNK’s great fighting music and it’s the reason why I sought out everything else.

One might think I am like most gamers and spent my childhood playing Final Fantasy games and Chrono Trigger. However, I sought out Final Fantasy music based on the reviews at soundtrackcentral.com, which I first read in 1999. I was astonished that those games were considered to have good music. I had to find out for myself, so I bought Final Fantasy VIII (the game), which had been recently released. Yes, Final Fantasy is good. Much better than I had ever thought. I have never been too impressed with Chrono Trigger, despite its large fan base. In fact, I don’t really like much of anything by Yasunori Mitsuda, other than Xenogears: Creid. My favorite unpopular Squaresoft music is Cyber Org and Bahamut Lagoon. The Lord of Vermilion series is also exceptional.

It was through the-place.com that I discovered Zuntata, since they had Zuntata Live 1997 factory sealed on sale for $10. I bought it way back in 2000 or 2001 and was stunned beyond belief. It all started with Zuntata Live 1997; I credit that album for my dedication to Zuntata. Insector X, however, is the best arranged album of Taito music.

The greatest disappointment here is Tecmo Game Music. I was so happy to get that album because of the fact it has music from Rygar, but I didn’t recognize it. Clearly, the Japanese version had incredibly different music. I was also very disappointed with G.S.M. Tecmo 1, since the Japanese version of Ninja Gaiden has slightly different music. The only way to listen to the NES music from Rygar or Ninja Gaiden is to play the games or listen to the .nsf files. I was slightly disappointed with the Ninja Gaiden II arrange album, finding it “weak”. Ninja Gaiden I, Ninja Gaiden II and Rygar all deserve first rate arrange albums, along with the NES soundtrack releases.

That's quite a collection. I'm curious where you got Choaniki - Otoko no Tamashii; I've been wanting to hear it since I heard Shigeki Hayashi composed part of the soundtrack.

Thanks for the reply! I'll look around those sites for a while and see what turns up. To be honest, I don't collect music or care too much about owning CDs, so I shy away from buying out-of-print soundtracks. For me it's more about the music itself, so I much prefer supporting active publishers and composers when I make a purchase.
